The main concern of patients facing this surgery is the fear of losing their voice, however rapid rehabilitation (particularly speech) can lessen the impact and restore the patient to a better speaking capacity post-surgery.
The larynx is located between the trachea (windpipe) and the upper airway known as the pharynx. Air from the lungs travels over vocal cords which results in vibrations; allowing us to speak. When the larynx is removed through an incision made in the neck, air can no longer pass from the lungs to the mouth as the windpipe no longer exists. To counteract this and allow the patient to breathe, the top of the trachea is attached to a permanent opening in the throat, also known as a stoma. Through this opening the patient can breathe.
